Welcome to Hearthside House

Hearthside is a unique 2 ½ story stone house, featuring a gable roof with impressive ogee curves above circular attic windows. The 10-room home includes 10 fireplaces. For over 200 years, Hearthside served as a private residence, until its purchase in 1996 by the Town of Lincoln. In 2001, under the direction of lifetime Lincoln resident, Kathy Hartley, a group of citizens formed “Friends of Hearthside”, a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to serve as stewards of the house and help preserve the property, while promoting its historical significance and accessibility to the public. Now an award-winning museum, volunteers open Hearthside House between March through December for guided tours, historically-themed events and exhibits, as well as by appointment for group tours.

The house got its name in the early 20th century when it was home to a nationally-renowned hand weaving called “The Hearthside Looms.” Over the years, Hearthside has become known as “The House That Love Built” because of the legendary history behind the building of this beautiful house by Stephen Hopkins Smith to entice a young lady to marry him.
